Out the box some of these vst instruments are too quite. Some of them have too many high peaks in volume, they’re too dynamic. We cannot just leave the levels how they are or we’ll have problems mastering this track. We want the track to be top quality so we’ll need fuel to get these levels good. Let’s find the best compressors to squash tracks and level the volume.
Compressor
I’ve talked about this before but this plugin will help us squash the dynamics, especially with these settings. Thats a fast attack so this compressor will get to work straight away. A low threshold, so it will compress from a low level. These are some extreme settings but this is how we use this effect. If the track is just too dynamic this will flatten it out fast and we can move onto something else. Or we could loosen the attack and threshold a bit to let the track bounce a bit more.
Ultra Shaper
Thats a brand new compressor in Cubase and it has many new algorithms for compression. Even straight out the box it does a great job taming the track. This compressor can detect the transients and feed them back into the compression circuit. Nice it has a side chain, so we can boost frequencies and silence frequencies. This might be the highest quality compressor because of all the options. It also has a display to show us the compression in real time.
Fuel
Thats similar to compressor but we can also add extra character with the bass, thick and crunch controls. The body control is for upward compression which is great for lead guitars and percussion. Theres even oversample mode for extra quality. A bit of crunch and soft clip are good on things like the drum bus.
