We have finished recording tracks for and mixing our project. Its great but we should now start working on the mix bus to master the track and get it at the right volume level. Lets add plugins to the mix bus and decide what LUFS level we want for the track.
Mix Level

Our mix peaks at -7db which is quite a good level to work with. First lets measure the psr level with the loudness ratio meter in supervision. We played the full track through the meter and its over 13 PSR. So lets add a limiter as the first plugin on the mix bus and put a ceiling on it to drop a few dbs on the loudest parts. Now its 12.5 PSR and thats good.
Shadow Hills

After the first limiter and a subtractive equaliser we can add the Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor to compress the mix. This compressor uses a VU Meter so we’ll need to check that and make sure we don’t clip it. We’ve added compression and the VU Meter is good with the level at about -7db. So we squashed the mix a bit but its still at about -7dbs.
Second EQ | LUFS

This second eq will add a lot of character to our track. We can boost frequencies that we’ve never boosted and experiment boosting more bands than 1 or 2. We’ve added about 0.5 to 1db of loudness with this eq. It sounds good but we should boost the mix with more plugins
Saturation and Second Limiter | LUFS

We can use the Black Box to add harmonic saturation and this can also add many dbs to our track. The track sounds great with saturation. We can add water with the limiter to get our final loudness. The LUFS level for the track is around -15 and that is good.
